Dental crowns are very common at our Fairfield, CT, office because they are so versatile. A crown is a tooth-shaped restoration that completely covers a tooth. It can strengthen a weak tooth, cover severe cavities, and even mask large cosmetic blemishes. But although crowns are common, they are also commonly misunderstood.
In this post, Dr. Gary Horblitt sets the record straight regarding dental crowns. He provides state-of-the-art restorations that can improve both function and appearance. He can also use crowns in connection with dental implants to replace missing teeth.

Myth #1: Dental crowns don’t look realistic.
The very first dental crowns were made of metal. Some patients still opt for metal crowns, particularly on the back molars. However, far more realistic materials are available. Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) is an alternative. PFM crowns are quite strong, but they are covered in a tooth-colored material. Nonetheless, over time, the metal can start to show through. This will give the crown a dark tint.
For the ultimate in realism, many patients choose all-porcelain or zirconia crowns. These materials will never darken. Furthermore, zirconia is slightly translucent. As a result, it sparkles like dental enamel. In fact, 99% of dentists who use zirconia crowns do so because of its realistic appearance.
Myth #2: Getting a crown is very painful.
Before placing a crown, Dr. Horblitt will reshape your tooth. He will administer local anesthesia beforehand, so you will feel virtually nothing during the procedure. After he places the restoration, you may experience some mild to moderate sensitivity. This does not usually last more than two weeks. Over-the-counter medications, saltwater rinses, and cold compresses can help alleviate discomfort.
Myth #3: Crowns don’t last very long.
Modern crowns are very durable. One study shows that 90% of dental crowns are still functioning after 10 years. Even better, another study looked at the durability of dental crowns when placed by a prosthodontist. 97% of crowns were still functioning at 10 years and 85% at 25 years.
This is one reason to visit a specialist like Dr. Horblitt when you need a dental crown. As a prosthodontist, he can place longer-lasting restorations.
Myth #4: Crowns can prevent tooth decay.
A crown will cover the entire tooth, but it’s still possible for decay to develop. Bacteria can enter underneath the restoration, affecting the natural tooth structure below. Most often, your dentist will need to remove the crown, treat the underlying decay, and place a new restoration.
Fortunately, as with all tooth decay, good hygiene can keep bacteria at bay. That is why it is important to brush and floss daily and regularly visit the dentist for cleanings.
