Although permanent dental procedures can positively impact your life, some are intimidated by the idea of committing to treatment—especially if they are unsatisfied with the results. Before seeking dental work, every patient should do their homework and schedule a consultation with a local, highly-rated dentist.
Choosing a dentist with years of success and extensive knowledge can also put your mind at ease. So, let me introduce you to a maxillofacial prosthodontist, Dr. Gary Horblitt. Since 1984, Dr. Horblitt has successfully helped patients in Fairfield, CT, and surrounding areas regain confidence and function in their smiles. Additionally, Dr. Horblitt has educated many dental professionals across the country in the art and science of prosthodontics and implant dentistry.
Some dental work can’t be reversed because they are meant to have long-lasting results. However, the following treatments may be improved or modified if needed:
Porcelain Veneers
You might have researched porcelain veneers if you have gaps, chips, or other minor cosmetic flaws. During the veneer process, your dentist must shave down about 1.5 mm of enamel. So, veneers are considered a permanent dental procedure.
If patients remove their veneers without replacement, their natural teeth won’t function to full capacity. Therefore, an entire veneer must be responsibly replaced if it cracks or chips.
Dental Crowns
Before a dentist places a dental crown, a substantial amount of dental structure must be smoothed away. Then, a crown or “cap” is placed over the remaining structure.
In some cases, a dentist can buff out a chipped area rather than replacing the entire dental crown. Because a considerable amount of dental structure is removed, dental crowns shouldn’t be removed unless they are being replaced.
Although dental crowns can last for years, the bonding agent that secures a crown weakens from constant saliva exposure. This deterioration may permit replacement if the prior crown cannot be reused.
Dental Bridge
Dental bridges are an excellent solution for people with one to a few missing teeth. A dental bridge consists of a false tooth (pontic) cemented by prosthetic teeth (abutments) on either side of the gap.
Like dental crowns, dental bridges require much of the natural tooth structure to be removed to make room for the restoration. Therefore, dental bridges must be replaced if damaged.
Dental Implants
Many consider dental implants to be fixed and permanent devices. Dental implants fuse with your natural jawbone and act as an artificial tooth root.
Although dental implant failure is rare, it’s possible to remove a dental implant and the attached crown when necessary. If a problem exists with the crown secured on top, a dentist or maxillofacial prosthodontist can quickly fix it.
Conversely, dental implants are more challenging to remove. In the past, dentists had to remove implants by cutting out a small amount of surrounding jawbone. Now, dentists can use a specialized tool that removes dental implants.
Generally, a dental implant can last for quite some time. Furthermore, many consider dental implant-supported restorations the most durable dental prosthetic on the market.
